3 RENO MISTAKES TO AVOID
Renovating can be one of the most expensive investments aside from actually buying your home, so you want to make smart choices. Here are our top tips on how to avoid silly costly mistakes.
NO VISION
Someone once said if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there. When it comes to renovating, we couldn’t agree more. Start with a vision board that becomes your foundation (pun intended), this should summarise your end goal and visually inspire your requirements. You can share this with your reno team so they’re on the same page as you too.
2. CHOOSING THE RIGHT TEAM
Every renovation is a massive team effort, choosing your team is key in a successful renovation. Whether you’re sourcing the team yourself or turning to the experts who have tried and tested a team effort, choose wisely. Make sure there’s effective communication, look at the quality of their previous work, credentials are in order, and an adequate payment schedule. Finally, rather choose professionals than DIY the hard jobs, you’ll most probably have to do it twice if not. We’re all for DIY to save some cash but there are some jobs that are better left to the skilled professionals.
3. FORGETTING THE LANDSCAPING
Landscaping has the ability to change the look of your house and transform your street appeal. Without a plan for landscaping your reno can fall flat and look unfinished. Just like your home reno budget, your garden budget requires you to take a top-down approach. Find out how much you can afford and then work out your spend by working from the top down, look at the necessities and then the nice to haves. Landscaping usually comes last so that’s a great reason to ensure it’s budgeted for in the beginning, with a contingency cap.
